Capricorn Marine Environmental seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented individual for an exciting, hands-on opportunity in the fisheries monitoring sector, supporting the deployment and performance of scientific observers in South Africa's small pelagic sector.
Key Responsibilities:
• Observer Deployment: Coordinate daily deployments of observers on fishing vessels and landing sites across the coast (St. Helena, Laaiplek, Gansbaai, Mossel Bay, Gqeberha)
• Operational Management: Weekend and night work during season (max 9 hours per work day), maintain deployment logs and WhatsApp communications
• Quality Assurance: Conduct harbour and factory site visits during offloads to evaluate observer performance and verify correct application of standardised sampling methodologies
• Data Management: Review, correct, and digitise observer data into the CapMarine system, support and troubleshoot transition to electronic data capture and validation
• Training & Support: Provide ongoing support and re-training to observers where necessary, submit incident reports and provide regular feedback to Programme Manager
• Reporting: Contribute to data quality control and monthly reporting, validate land-based monitoring data
Contract: Full-time, 2-year fixed-term
Start Date: 1 July 2025
Remuneration: R264,000 annually
Reporting: Direct to Program Manager
Coverage: West Coast and South Coast landing sites

Essential Requirements:
• Appropriate degree/diploma in marine sciences/environmental management/conservation management with focus on monitoring (preferred)
• Minimum 2 years experience in the pelagic industry and demonstrable history of managing people
• Good leadership skills required for managing Observers across the coast
• Emphasis on communication and coordination skills
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
• High level of integrity and committed work ethic required
• Attention to detail, especially in data handling
• Willingness to travel regularly to sites within the West Coast region
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Access database and GIS
• Own vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed)
